Historian I4 Implementation at CMPC Papeles

Success story about replacing Canary Labs Historian with modern time-series database InfluxDB, enabled by using ogamma Visual Logger (predecessor of Idako) as a connector to the data sources over OPC UA interface. The project was implemented by our customer Grupo Salba.

Customer

CMPC Papeles pulp and paper facility

CMPC Papeles – A major Chilean industrial facility dedicated to the production of paper and related materials. Part of the CMPC Group ($7.7 Bln revenue in 2023).

Challenge

CMPC was using a legacy version of Canary Labs as a data historian. However, the system had stability issues and lacked key functionalities. License costs were also high.

It needed a more reliable and flexible alternative that could be implemented quickly and scaled over time.

Solution

A full migration to an open architecture based on the Historian I4 concept was successfully carried out, integrating robust and modern technologies for industrial data collection and visualization.

Technologies used:

Key Results

  • Replacement of a proprietary historian with a fully open-source-based solution
  • Significant reduction in licensing and maintenance costs
  • Full visibility and control over plant data collection and visualization
  • Seamless integration of OPC UA data with InfluxDB and Grafana

Current Status

The system is live, collecting production data from the plant in real time, running on Windows Server 2019, and set up for future scaling to other areas.
